“For the most part my parents and siblings all worked in the fields, they just don't know how to get out of that cycle. They are used to the cycle of 'I work and I live on a day to day.' They don't save their money, they don't move forward. The best thing we could do for my mother was take her out of the fields and offer her a clerical job at the vocational school with Jorge.”

“When I left home to come to Los Angeles I told my auntie that I wanted to go to school and she kind of tried to talk me out of it because she said there was going to be no way for me to work and go to school. But I disagreed and told her to watch me try it and I told her if I failed, not a problem, I'll manage. She said, 'Okay, I'll take you' and so she did and and I started school 2 days later.”
