Magdalena Reyes Chaidez's father worked under the Bracero Contract
in the early 1950s and later relocated his family permanently from Mexicali to
Mecca in 1960. Her mother, who began working at age 5, grew up reminding herself
that if she ever had children, she would want them to have a professional career.
Magdalena, like her mother, has encouraged her children to pursue a higher education.
Her son, Victor, is presently attending Cal State University of San Bernardino.
Her youngest daughter, Veronica, attends College of the Desert. Magdalena teaches
Beginning English classes at the local Mecca Family Farm Worker Services Center.
To this day, none of her children have ever worked in the fields.
